Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) has the potential to create jobs, support livelihoods and fuel local development, Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai has said.

The PS emphasized that for the government, ASM is not merely a means of survival but a strategic economic pillar with the ability to enhance GDP, boost mineral exports and stimulate industrial growth.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Migori County Miners Association, Mr. Kimtai highlighted the importance of addressing the sector's challenges while enhancing government support through robust regulation, capacity building and the formalization of ASM operations.

The association took this opportunity to brief him on an upcoming ASM Summit, which Mr. Kimtai hailed as a commendable initiative.

"This summit is not just a gathering; it’s a strategic forum aimed at uniting government agencies and ASM stakeholders to tackle the industry’s pressing challenges," he stated as he accepted the role of chief guest.

Mr. Kimtai expressed admiration for the resilience and innovation demonstrated by Migori County miners, underscoring their potential to significantly impact the economy with the right support.

The meeting resolved to convene a consultative session with the county security team to address the issue of foreign nationals operating illegally in the mining sector
